The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts brings the finest in music, dance, theater and more to Kentucky! We are the home for Louisville’s nationally-renowned arts scene, to the Louisville Orchestra, Kentucky Opera, Louisville Ballet, Stage One Family Theatre and PNC Bank Broadway in Louisville, as well as a host of community theaters and our own Kentucky Center Presents performances. The three theaters of the Center, along with our sister facility the elegant W. L. Lyons Brown Theatre, are Kentucky’s showcases for the performing arts. From Broadway to ballet, from blues to bluegrass, from Big Bands to Beethoven, our stages overflow with magnificent entertainment almost every night of the year.
Located near Barren River Lake in south central Kentucky, the facility is run by a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Barren Heights Christian Retreat Center, Inc. The campus was built for the primary purpose of hosting mini-vacation style retreats for families who have one or more children with a physical or developmental disability.
Hearkening back to the glory days of Louisville’s theater district, the Brown Theatre is a lavish, lovingly restored showplace. State-of-the-art technology combines with Old World splendor to create a performance space as beautiful to look at as it is comfortable to sit in. Seating approximately 1,400 patrons, the Brown stands today as the Grand Dame of Louisville’s artistic community.

In the late 1700s, Revolutionary War veterans and other colonizers began to settle in the area that would eventually become known as Jeffersontown. At that point in time, life was still harrowing with the constant threat of Indian attacks, but the pioneer spirit persevered and more settlers arrived to populate the lovely, arable lands just south of the Ohio River and east of the port that would become the City of Louisville.
In 1794, Abraham Bruner purchased 122 acres on a forested ridge near Chenoweth Run Creek with the intent of establishing a town at the intersection of two roads commonly traveled by the new settlers. Business owners quickly obtained plots from Bruner and set up shop along Main and Market streets, which would later become known as Watterson Trail and Taylorsville Road.
The square became a hub of activity, complete with hotels, blacksmiths, potters, and every other pioneer activity imaginable. In fact, the area became something of a “county seat” – a place where people from miles around could come to conduct business and purchase goods, rather than make the long and arduous journey to Louisville by horse and cart.
Residents dubbed their new settlement “Brunerstown,” to show pride in Abraham Bruner and their primarily Germanic heritage. On May 3, 1797, however, the city was officially incorporated and named after the current vice-president, Thomas Jefferson. Even though the Jefferson County Court recognized the new city as the “Town of Jefferson,” or “Jeffersontown,” its inhabitants continued to refer to it as Brunerstown throughout the next century.
With more than 70 rides and attractions, including six world-class roller coasters, a huge water park, children’s rides, games, shows, and so much more, Kentucky Kingdom has something to please everyone in the family!
The Kentucky Railway Museum owes its beginning to a small number of rail enthusiasts who formed a local chapter of the National Railway Historical Society in 1948. In the early 1950’s, the Chapter asked the Louisville and Nashville Railroad for the donation of a steam locomotive to form the nucleus of a railway museum.
