Assessment Information

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) will assess any child, ages 3 to 21 years, if he or she is suspected of having a disability.

If a child is preschool age and not enrolled in a JCPS program and the parent/guardian suspects that he or she may have a disability, the Placement Office may be contacted for information.

If a child is enrolled in a Jefferson County public school and the parent/guardian suspects that he or she has a disability, the parent/guardian may contact either the school counselor or the the child’s teacher to discuss concerns and a possible referral for assessment.

If a child is not enrolled in a Jefferson County public school and the parent/guardian suspects that he or she has a disability, the parent/guardian may contact the ECE Placement to discuss concerns and a possible referral for assessment.

Upon receipt of the completed written referral, the parent/guardian will be invited to attend an Admissions and Release Committee (ARC) meeting to discuss the identified concerns.  At that meeting, the parent/guardian may be asked to grant consent for assessment in the areas of concern.

Once an assessment is completed, the parent/guardian will be invited to attend another ARC meeting to discuss the assessment results.

The ARC will consider all current and valid assessments when determining disability eligibility, including assessments completed by other agencies.

If a child is identified as having a disability that adversely affects his or her educational performance, the ARC may develop an individual Education Program (IEP) in order to determine specific goals and objectives/benchmarks to target within the educational program.
